The visibility of stars through instruments with an aberrational scattering spot is discussed. As a result of field investigations on the visibility of real stars conducted in 1969-72, curves were obtained expressing the worsening of star visibility as a function of the scattering circle diameter for background brightnesses of less than about 10 nt, and formulas are given for calculating the efficiency of an instrument having an aberrational scattering spot in the case of observation of stars and other point sources.
