Scientific paper
The paper describes a concept for future small Shuttle-launched reusable platforms, considered as a means of cost reduction for low earth orbit (LEO) missions. The first platform of this new type of spacecraft is SPAS-01, to be launched in 1982. Follow-on concepts are presented for astronomy missions (ASTRO-PLATFORM) and space processing activities (SP-PLATFORM) which have quite different requirements. Further, a standard platform is discussed which could be equipped with payload modules of different kinds. Finally, the operational and management aspects of this new approach are discussed.
