The advantages of electric-chemical (EC) propulsion over nuclear-thermal (NT) propulsion for manned Mars missions are examined. In particular, the heavy lift vehicle requirement for EC propelled Mars missions is only 70 metric tons compared with 250 mt for NT propulsion. Initially, three trips by the heavy lift vehicle to low earth orbit are required for both EC and NT propulsion systems. On subsequent missions, however, only one trip of the lift vehicle is required by the EC system. The manned portion of the EC mission is faster since electric thrust can be maintained for long periods of time in low-gravity space.
