Solar images clearly demonstrate that its atmosphere consists not of homogeneous,temperature-stratified layers, but rather of discrete structures non-uniformlydistributed across the solar disk on a wide range of spatialscales (starting at <100 km). An understanding of the small scale atmosphericstructure and energy balance is required before we can realistically exploreand test the myriad proposed magnetic and non-magnetic heating mechanismsresponsible for the outer atmospheric emission. We propose to map the outeratmosphere of the CM Dra system with unprecedented spatial resolution: of order900 km. This mapping can be accomplished by using using the star as anocculting screen during the eclipses. The location of CM Dra in the continuousviewing zone will allow its entire eclipse to be observed uninterrupted byEarth occultations. These data will be combined with photometry and Dopplerimaging to yield detailed 3-D maps of the stellar atmosphere, from thephotospheric magnetic structure to the chromosphere and transition region. Wewill also study variations in structure with convection zone depth and age, andexplore the nature of "saturated" activity on stellar surface topography.
