Trying to reveal the secrets of the universe at the time of recombination, the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) will map the cosmic background radiation at 100 wavelengths in the infrared and microwave regions of the spectrum. COBE's two extremely sensitive infrared detectors will be kept at a few degrees above absolute zero by means of 200-lb supercold liquid helium to prevent them from radiating more energy than they are trying to detect. A microwave detector will be looking for fluctuations in the strength of the background radiation from point to point in the sky. While the infrared maps are part of a speculative attempt to search for the light from the first stars and galaxies, the observations on the microwave background will try to find an explanation of its isotropic character in a totally anisotropic universe.
