H-alpha and forbidden N II line profiles have been obtained along nine long-slit positions over the filaments bounding the three subshells A-C of the SNR IC443. It is found that the line profiles over the filamentary edge of the subshell C confirm its supernova origin, and the wavy sheet model of Hester (1987) is the most likely explanation of the unusual, localized high-speed motions in IC443. Bow shocks produced by a supersonic flow of gas encountering globules fail in several important respects to explain these motions, but still have general characteristics which mean they should not be discounted completely until more complete observations have been made. The blistering shell model also requires more observations before rejection. The suggestion of Braun and Strom (1986) that the SNR that formed IC443 exploded within three preexisting cavities is strengthened by the present observations.
