This paper gives a brief overview of some of the key areas in the Earth's ionosphere and magnetosphere. Although we know these regions and their connections to the solar radiation and solar wind activities already quite well, there are still plenty of unresolved problems. The fundamental goal of the solar-terrestrial physics to predict space weather around the Earth and to understand how the sun and its variability affect life and human technology/society on the Earth. In addition knowledge achieved in detailed Sun-Earth connection studies are useful for a variety of problems related to the other solar system bodies and astrophysical objects because many of the complex plasma processes that are common in the universe can be investigated in great detail in the near-Earth space.
