The structure and composition of the thermosphere, the earth's upper atmosphere above 80 km, is described. Data are gathered through ground-based radar, airglow photometers, magnetometers, riometers, and ionsondes, as well as rocket probes and the Atmospheric Explorer satellite program. Phenomena occurring in the thermosphere, including molecular photodissociation and diffusion, thermal variation, tidal motion, plasma motion and irregularities, and magnetic and electric field behavior, are considered. The study of solar interaction with the earth through the thermosphere will provide a basis for such studies of other planets.
