The characteristics of the Pinatubo stratospheric cloud as observed in 51 lidar soundings, during the six months following the eruption, in June 1991, are reported. The vertical and horizontal evolution and the mass content of the cloud are analyzed and compared to the El Chichon event. Stratospheric temperature soundings, taken at the time of the lidar measurements, are also discussed.
