We describe the early optical observations of the GRB 990806 error box
by the Japan/New Zealand Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics (MOA)
collaboration. We discuss the telescope system, its operation and
suitability for rapid observations for gamma-ray burst optical
afterglows. .
