The Infrared Space Observatory, launched November 17 1995, provides the first opportunity for spectroscopic observations over the complete 2.4-200 micrometer wavelength range above the atmosphere. The Short Wavelength Spectrometer (SWS) (de Graauw et al.) is one of the four instruments on board, covering the wavelength region 2.38-45.2 micrometers with a spectral resolving power ranging from 1000 to 2000. Using Fabry-Perot etalons, the resolving power can be increased by a factor of approximately 20 in the wavelength range between 11.4 and 44.5 micrometers. The near- and mid-infrared part of the spectrum is very rich in atomic and molecular lines, so that a wide variety of astrophysical objects (interstellar medium, star-forming regions, stars, galaxies, planetary atmospheres, comets) are being observed with the SWS. An excellent overview of the exciting first results is given in the special ISO issue of Astronomy and Astrophysics, which will appear in November 1996. Here only a subset of results on the interstellar medium will be mentioned.
