The three-points method is based in the fact that the Galactic interstellar extinction law in the ultraviolet presents two wavelengths, 1700 and 2420 A, that have the same extinction value. Between them, the extinction law has a maximum at 2175 A. The absorption depth at 2175 A, measured from the interpolated flux between the observed fluxes at 1700 and 2420 A gives a parameter directly proportional to the color excess E(B-V). This parameter is independent from the spectral type and the luminosity class of the considered star. The advantage of this method is that the color excess of a star can be determined only from measurements in three ultraviolet bands centered at 1700, 2175, and 2420 A without previous knowledge of the spectral type and luminosity class of the object.
