Intercosmos-17 and ISEE-1 data are used to study the characteristics of the auroral-peak (AP) region: a structure defined by penetrations of high-energy solar electrons on the night side of the polar cap. It is shown that the AP is connected with the precipitation of solar electrons on closed field lines; hence, the penetration boundary of solar electrons on the night side is not the boundary of closed/open flux tubes in the magnetotail. Nonadiabatic scattering of particles in the current sheet is shown to be the most probable mechanism of AP formation.
