Velocities of vertical motions of the electron component of the ionospheric plasma during sudden storm commencements are determined on the basis of an analysis of the frequency spectrum and power of oblique-sounding signals as well as on the basis of numerical simulation results. An assessment is made of velocities of random motions of small-scale electron-density irregularities induced by the geomagnetic disturbances. It is shown that the sudden commencements cause a drift of the ionospheric plasma with periods of 30-120 s, which may be connected with the generation of Pi2 geomagnetic pulsations.
