The paper studies the nonlinear dynamics of adiabatic density fluctuations in perfect-fluid cylindrical universes in the regimes where the wavelength of the inhomogeneity is much less than or much greater than the Jeans length. The precise role of the particle horizon is clarified, and it is shown that shock waves will form, resulting in the rapid dissipation of the fluctuations whenever the pressure is greater than zero but less than the density. Various linear-perturbation results can be easily retrieved from this analysis in the appropriate limits.
