The long-term evolution of Halley-type comets is investigated, testing different models using numerical integration methods. Results are presented for a simple model (the sun-Jupiter-Halley model, model I) and a more realistic model (the sun-Jupiter-Saturn-Halley model, model II). The dynamical evolution of the comet's orbit is compared with analytical results. The results of both models show that there are periods with no drastic changes in the elements of the Halley-type comet for up to 200,000 yrs. At these periods, the constancy of the energy always coincides with smooth decreases of the inclination and the excentricity (which are highly correlated in the calculated comets), followed by further increases. Model II made it possible to detect new phenomena, such as capture into resonance caused by a close approach with Saturn, or escape from resonance. This is the reason for the failure of mapping methods used by Chirikov and Vecheslavov (1986) to represent model II.
