Two different types of time-dependent electric field distributions have been used to illustrate the formation of a plasmapause, taking the plasma interchange mechanism into account. The time-dependent plasmapause positions obtained for realistic values of the integrated Pedersen conductivity are given for a 3.5-day period encompassing the substorm events of July 29-30, 1977. Large amplitude deformations of the calculated plasmapause are noted to occur after periods of enhanced geomagnetic activity.
