The effect of gravitational drag on the motion of a satellite galaxy orbiting a more massive primary galaxy is investigated by means of computer simulations based on the 60,000-particle two-dimensional polar-coordinate N-body model of Miller (1976 and 1978). Results for models simulating both cold disks (without velocity dispersion) and hot disks with and without spherical halos are presented graphically and analyzed. The change in energy due to tidal interaction is found to be negative in all cases, with the strongest effect for an isolated cold disk and greater energy absorption for direct satellite orbits than for retrograde orbits. These findings are shown to be in conflict with those of Palmer and Papaloizou (1982 and 1984) for cold disks but in reasonable agreement for hot disks with halos.
