The force of dynamical friction on a softened point mass moving in a circular orbit inside a particle disc is studied theoretically and by means of numerical simulations. We derive an improved analytic estimate of the dynamical friction taking into account the effects of corotation and Lindblad resonances. This estimate is compared with the frictional force measured in numerical experiments where the disturber is constrained to move on a circular orbit. The analytic estimate is in good agreement with the measured force in non-self-gravitating experiments. We then study non-linear and collective effects on the friction by means of experiments involving larger disturber masses and the self-gravity of the disc. We find that the collective effects depend on the mass of the disturber. For large masses the self-gravity enhances the friction by a small factor, whereas for small disturber masses dynamical friction is inhibited by collective effects.
