Several series of orbits for the probable motion of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC and LMC) about the Galaxy are obtained on the assumptions that the two smaller galaxies have been in a binary state for the last 5 to 10 billion years and that distortion of the galactic disk was produced along with the Magellanic Stream by the gravitational interaction among the Galaxy, the LMC, and the SMC. Specific casesare examined in which the LMC is assumed to have a perigalacticon of 20, 30, and 40 kpc. It is shown that the probability that the LMC and SMC were in a binary state for the last 5 to 10 billion years increases as the perigalacticon increases from 20 to 40 kpc and that the most likely perigalacticon of the LMC lies near 30 kpc. The distortion of the Galaxy is estimated by using 400 to 500 test particles to simulate its structure and following their motions due primarily to the LMC. The dynamic behavior of matter in and around the clouds under the tidal force of the Galaxy is analyzed in the same manner, with specific reference to the formation of the Magellanic Stream. The most reasonable orbital elements for the LMC are presented along with some constraints on the motion of the SMC.
