Project CLEA (Contemporary Laboratory Experiences in Astronomy) and the XMM-Newton Project have produced a new modular exercise about obtaining and analyzing X-ray spectroscopic data of a supernova remnant using the XMM-Newton satellite. Using a simulated X-ray telescope, students are able to obtain spectra of several knots in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant. Data analysis software, based on an extensive database of model spectra, allows students to fit computed spectra to the observations, thus determining temperatures, densities, and element abundances in the supernova remnant, which they can then use to estimate the total amounts of heavy elements ejected into the interstellar medium during a typical supernova. The exercise includes an student workbook with background information on X-ray astronomy and stellar evolution, along with instructions on the use of the software. As with other CLEA exercises, all materials can be downloaded directly from the internet and run on local PCs. A beta version of the software has been evaluated in classes at a number of colleges, and the software was made available to the public in early 2006. The website of Project CLEA is http://www.gettysburg.edu/academics/physics/clea/CLEAhome.html and the website of XMM-Newton is http://xmm.sonoma.edu. This research was sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Gettysburg College, and NASA's XMM-Newton mission.
