We present results of the observations of dwarf planets Haumea and Makemake performed with Herschel Space Observatory within the "TNOs are Cool" key program.
Haumea was observed on December 23 and 25, 2009, and June 20- 21, 2010 with the PACS photometer at 100 and 160 microns. Assigning a rotational phase for each one of these observational dates (rotational period= 3.915341 h), we obtain a clear thermal lightcurve at 100 microns, and only a marginal one at 160 microns. This thermal lightcurve is correlated with the visible lightcurve which confirms that the latter is due to shape effects. An initial data reduction using the Dec. 2009 data suggested a very large and difficult to explain amplitude for the thermal lightcurve of almost a factor of 2 (Lellouch et al. 2010). With the new June 2010 data rather indicates a more modest amplitude with a factor around 1.5, closer to the 30 % amplitude obtained for the visible lightcurve. The effect of the dark and red spot present in the optical lightcurve is still unclear. The albedo and effective diameter derived from the thermal fits are consistent with the previous analysis of the thermal lightcurve.
Makemake was observed on November 30, 2009, and June 2-3, 2010 with PACS at 70, 100 and 160 microns obtaining a very nice detection. This object was also observed with SPIRE at 250, 350 and 500 microns on November 29, 2009, and December 1st, 2009 (Lim et al. 2010). We will present and discuss the obtained fluxes and the albedo and diameter resultant for the radiometric fits.
