The results of numerous observations of dwarf novae are discussed. The dwarf nova model is summarized, and the phenomena of outbursts are described, showing a UV spectrum of one of the dwarf novae and typical light curves for the three dwarf nova subgroups. The IUE observation program and its activity with regard to outbursts are addressed, and a list of dwarf nova observations by amateur astronomers is presented. The contribution of the latter group to professional observations is described, showing light curves obtained from amateur observations. Finally, the observed outburst spectra and mass loss by dwarf novae are discussed.
