Measurements made with the Vega PUMA instrument indicate the presence of dust particles as small as 5 x 10 to the -17th g in the dust coma of Comet Halley. The dust shell has a diffuse boundary, and fine dust is detectable at distances as great as 500,000 km. The dust shell is highly inhomogeneous; narrow zones of high dust flux density are present which indicate the presence of intense local sources on the surface of the nucleus.
