The distribution of dust clouds along the line of sight in the direction of the CO molecular cloud in the W3 region of star formation was studied by means of colour excesses of stars. The extinction curve is based on spectral types and BV-photometry of 43 stars. The total absorption from the Sun to the CO dusty molecular cloud at the distance of r = 2.2±0.2 kpc is ≡4m - 7m. The value of Av in the foreground dust clouds (r ≤ 0.9 kpc) is about 2m. The extinction in the dust clouds associated with the W3 complex reaches ≡2m - 5m. The eastern and southern diffuse parts of the H II region are nearly free from the associated dust matter.
