Solar System, Interplanetary Dust, Zodiacal Light

Scientific paper

Interplanetary space is populated by dust from various sources: comets and asteroids are the source of the zodiacal cloud in the inner planetary system (<3 AU from the Sun), the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt is probably a significant source of dust ion the outer planetary system (>5 AU), Jupiter's magnetosphere sheds tiny, 10 nm-sized particles in the surrounding space, and grains arriving from interstellar space traverse the planetary system on hyperbolic trajectories. Dynamical effects on dust particles depend strongly on their sizes: grains below 100 nm in size are dominated by electromagnetic interaction with the ambient magnetic field, particles up to about 1 micron in size feel significant repulsive force of radiation pressure, whereas the dynamics of bigger particles is governed by the gravitational forces of the Sun and the planets. Various methods have been applied in order to obtain information on dust in interplanetary space: zodiacal light observations of sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust as well as infrared observations of the thermal emission have provided the spatial distribution of interplanetary dust, lunar microcraters statistics was used to determine the size distribution at 1 AU, and in situ measurements by spaceprobes are used to characterize dust in remote regions of the solar system.
