There is now good evidence that supernovae are a major source of interstellar dust in the Universe. We briefly review this evidence, circumstantial and direct - emphasising the uncertainties in observation and interpretation. For the evolution of dust in galaxies (particularly at very early epochs) the important distinction is made between dust formed in low or intermediate mass giant star atmospheres, and dust made rapidly from freshly-synthesisied elements in massive stars and supernovae. We acknowledge the difficulties of theoretical treatment of both the formation and the survival of the cores of dust grains, but encourage further research.
