The role of dust in generating wind in the envelope of a red giant is examined analytically to determine the conditions under which the dust grains can create an instability. A model of the envelope is developed to determine the influence of the dust on the pressure gradient and the gas-density profile. Analytic expressions are employed to describe the grain velocity, the existence condition of a mass flow, and the minimum dust-grain flow. The temperature profile of the gaseous envelope is important in determining the origin of the dust stellar wind, and the dust presence can modify - but not create - the wind for certain decreasing temperatures. When the temperatures decrease more rapidly, the grain flux can play a key role in driving the gas pressure and producing an instability. It is found that motion can be generated when a minimum dust-grain flux is present at the origin of the wind.
