The "synthetic field method" proposed by Gonzalez et. al. (1998) is designed to determine the dust opacities in nearby spirals and irregulars using the number of background galaxies detected through the foreground galaxy. These numbers are compared to those of simulated fields; the original field with an extincted Hubble Deep Field added. We present preliminary results on cold dust absorption in arm and interarm regions and the radial distribution of absorption, based on a dataset of deep HST/WFPc2 exposures in V and I of the spiral arms of 25 relatively nearby spiral galaxies.
