The effects of transmitter power, voltage threshold, sounding carrier frequency, and path length on the time (tau) of existence of a signal reflected from the sporadic E layer in oblique sounding is assessed. These effects were examined on the basis of experimental data obtained on the Arkhangel'sk-Kazan' path at frequencies of 9, 14, and 24 MHz in 1976; on the Moskow-Kazan' path at frequencies of 10, 15, and 20 MHz in 1979; and on the Moscow-Odessa path at frequencies of 10 and 15 MHz in 1980. It is shown that tau is directly proportional to the electron density in the sporadic-E 'cloud'.
