We study the effect of a parallel electric field on the adiabatic motion of electrons trapped in the Io flux tube and we derive the frequency drift rate of the S-bursts emitted at the gyrofrequency. The magnetic field model is a dipole and the cyclotron maser instability is the mechanism responsible for the emission. It appears that weak values of the electric field (a few mu V m(-1) ) may change drastically the frequency range and drift rate of the bursts. We propose an individual fitting of certain types of S-bursts, in particular the types a, r, f of Riihimaa's classification, by a curve depending only on the energy and the pitch angle at the equator and on the value of the parallel electric field.
