A drift chamber is a device in which electrons liberated in a medium by ionizing collisions can be moved away (drift) from their initial position by appropriate electrical fields and transported to well-determined positions. The displacement of the electrons serves many purposes: (1) position determination of the initial electrons, (2) production of a single image by transport along well-defined lines of force, (3) detection of neutral radiation by secondary emission in divided solid matter, and (4) measurement of trajectory information for large drift volumes after transfer of initial electrons to a multiwire chamber. Drift chambers are described for positions and time measurements, as well as particle identification. Two special types are mentioned: a spherical drift chamber and a high divided matter density drift space chamber.
