The basic physical properties of double mode Cepheids and double mode δ Scuti stars are still very controversial in spite of extensive studies during more than 15 years. Based upon results of very recent opacity calculations a detailed, consistent, possible solution of the problem of the nature of double mode variable stars is developed. Besides unifying the understanding of the double mode Cepheids and the δ Scuti stars, the new models also predict the observed center of the Hertzsprung progression sequence at 10 days and agree very well with the models for double RR Lyrae stars favoured by stellar evolution arguments.
