The dynamic evolution of the ionosphere auroral cavity boundary has been studied using 1-D and 2-D kinetic Vlasov simulations. The simulations are initialized with a strong observation-based double layer (DL) and include two ion species (H+,O+) and electrons. The initial 1-D DL models are stationary solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system, though they are not necessarily stable. Because FAST observations suggest that most DLs are oblique to the magnetic field, we have studied the 2-D evolution of a related DL in an oblique geometry (i.e., the initial DL normal and geomagnetic field are not parallel to each other). Results from the 1-D and oblique 2-D simulations will be presented. We show that the DL is quasi-stable in both 1-D and 2-D. In addition, the simulations verify that the streaming interaction between accelerated H+ and O+ populations, continuously replenished by the DL, provides the free energy for the persistent formation of ion phase-space holes. A comparison between FAST observations of ion holes and the ion holes seen in the simulation will be made. A surpising result from both the 1-D and 2-D simulations is that under certain conditions an ion-acoustic soliton (IAS) forms in the auroral upward current region that is associated with a population of earthward-traveling ions. FAST observations of an IAS and earthward traveling ions will be shown which compares favorably with the simulations.
