The double-diffusion (DD) approximation (where the evolution of the photon distribution function is described as diffusion with respect to both frequency and space) is used to study radiative transfer in line wings in the case when scattering is coherent in the reference frame of the atom. Exact analytical solutions of the DD-approximation equations are obtained for a number of model problems, and the accuracy and applicability limits of this approximation are assessed. The DD approximation is also compared with the total-frequency-redistribution approximation.
