The theory and experiment of Doppler-free multiphoton transitions without intermediate state are reviewed. The principle of two-photon absorption in a standing wave and its generalization to multiphotonic transitions are described. Second-order perturbation theory is applied to calculate the Doppler-free two-photon and multiphoton transition probabilities. Some Doppler-free two-photon and three-photon experiments in sodium are described. A tensorial formalism for two-photon spectroscopy is developed.
