Methods Of Observation
Scientific paper
The author reviews the literature concerning human vision in low light conditions, from both physiological and astronomical perspectives. In particular, the concepts of dark adaption and limiting magnitude are explored. The literature demonstrates that dark adaptation continues for well beyond one hour, and is affected by a short period variation, seasonal variations and prior light exposure. Limiting magnitude is a more controversial concept. The relevant literature is fragmented and inconsistent, and rarely correlates with empirical observation. In response, the author presents tables of magnitude thresholds, with respect to probability of detection, for telescopes of various apertures and designs.
