Scientific paper

The paper examines the question of the relation between the height of the F2 layer maximum and the constant-pressure level, which is associated with certain difficulties in explaining negative ionospheric disturbances. It is shown that the maximum of the midlatitude F2 layer does not (in its variations) follow the constant-pressure level but, in the daytime, is fixed to a prescribed level of the O/N2 ratio.
