Hst Proposal Id #6595 Solar System

Scientific paper

Pluto and its satellite Charon most likely formed in the solarnebula, and hence their composition can give us informationabout the early solar nebula. Furthermore, Pluto's tenuous,low-temperature atmosphere provides an interesting new regimefor extending our understanding of atmospheric physics. FromEarth, the only means of learning about these bodies atkilometer spatial resolution is through stellar occultations. We propose to observe two occultations by Pluto with the FOSin order to discriminate between the hazy and clear models forits atmosphere and to probe for variation in Pluto'satmospheric structure as it recedes from the sun.
