A Monte Carlo simulation is employed to examine if a previously observed correlation between the strengths of magnetic fields and the transverse velocities of radio pulsars is an artifact of observational selection. The two selection effects inherent in measurements of field strengths and transverse velocities of pulsars are the instrumental sensitivity to the magnitude of the radio flux and the effects of distance on the capability of measuring the velocity, respectively. The simulation identifies the stellar populations which would be affected by the selection effects. A 3 percent probability is found that selection effects were important in observations by Anderson and Lyne (1983). The probability becomes 20-30 percent with the population scanned by Cordes (1985). It is suggested that there are at least two types of radio pulsars, one with fairly large velocities and strong magnetic fields and another with low velocities and weak magnetic fields.
