The past space missions and future plans for space exploration and industrialization are examined from the standpoint of possible detrimental effects on the environment. Such effects may include the contamination of parts of the surface of a celestial body (by extraction and processing of materials), contamination of the atmosphere, biological contamination by terrestrial microorganisms, and nuclear contamination resulting from the use of nuclear reactors. Environmental protection criteria for the solar system are proposed, and the case of the Martian satellite Phobos, an attractive source of raw materials for interplanetary missions, is discussed as an example.
