A better understanding of quasars in cluster environments may provide clues to the reasons for quasar ignition and the subsidence throughout cosmic evolution. Although dark matter is the dominant component of all cluster environments and has been implicated in hierarchical models as an important part of quasar formation, there have been few observational studies to investigate the total matter (bright and dark) environment of quasars. Furthermore, studies that have been done preferentially target massive clusters with relatively low mass-to- light ratios that are known to contain a single quasar. We propose to continue our unique study of the distribution of quasars within massive dark matter peaks discovered in the Deep Lens Survey (DLS) and selected through weak gravitational lensing methods. Our sample of shear-selected clusters is the only one of its kind currently available. With near-IR images of these clusters, taken with ISPI on the Blanco 4m, we have been able to efficiently select quasar candidates, including reddened quasars. Now we need to confirm these candidates with spectra. These data will provide an unbiased sample of quasars with which we can begin to constrain the mass-to-light ratio of host clusters, and test assumptions of mass and quasar spatial distributions assumed in the hierarchical models of Kauffmann and Haehnelt (2002).
