Analysis of a spectrum of the 1981 July 26 solar flare indicates that the 'magnetic transients' recently detected with a videomagnetograph at the Big Bear Solar Observatory more likely represent brightness effects than magnetic phenomena. Direct measurements of the Zeeman splitting in the 5233, 5324, 5447, 5587 Fe I lines show that in this flare the field strength reached 3000 gauss.
