The statistical behavior of that most extreme class of sunspots, the delta-spot, can help identify their source region and formation mechanism. We examined data from the Mt. Wilson Sunspot Group Reports from 1966 to 2004 in order to determine whether sunspots of different magnetic classifications had different latitudinal distributions. We found that delta-spots seem to have a narrower distribution than non-delta-spots, in that they do not reach quite the same maximum latitudes, and they do not approach the equator quite as closely. Other magnetic classifications seem to share the same distribution as sunspots as a whole. We discuss these findings in light of our present understanding of the solar dynamo and the convection zone dynamics.
