Measurements of the atmospheric content of OH on a local scale using the fluorescence assay with gas expansion (FAGE) technique are reported. The main probe was a YAG/dye laser running at 30 Hz with pulses 1 mJ energy per pulse. Dielectric filters tuned to 3 nm and which had a focal length of f/1.5 were employed. Signals passed through two parallel air-sampling and fluorescence detection channels sharing a single 0.5 m White cell. Continuous samples were collected during two 36 hr periods in early summer and late autumn over Portland, OR in 1985. Techniques applied in the FAGE measurements are detailed. The data confirmed the presence of OH in the troposphere at concentrations that agree with tropospheric chemical theory. Application of the FAGE method to OH measurements in relatively clear troposphere regions and in different seasons is necessary to characterize the photochemical processes of OH production and conversion.
