Ground-based observations of SO2 and SO (collectively, SOx) in the Venus middle atmosphere (70-100 km) indicate extreme variability on weekly, diurnal, and interannual timescales. Diurnal analysis is based on sub-mm (346 GHz) spectroscopic observations since 2004 (made with JCMT - the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, Mauna Kea, Hawaii). Data collected through the full range of Venus' sub-Earth local times, and over multiple orbital cycles, indicate measurable quantities of each molecule at all local times. Diurnal dependence of abundances is strong, with [SO (day)] >> [SO (night)], and [SO2 (night)] >> [SO2 (day)]. Altitude dependence of SOx, derived from shape of the pressure-broadened lines, shows each molecule is present in the upper (85-100 km), but not lower (70-85 km) mesosphere. Unlike abundance, altitude of the SOx lower boundary ( 85 km) has very weak variability over approx 82-90 km, with no diurnal dependence. We discuss diurnal variability in the context of variabilities at other timescales, and altitude dependence in the context of other measurement systems. Our measurement system is sensitive to altitudes adjoining, but distinctly above, the cloud top altitudes at which (eg) Pioneer Venus measured SO2. Correspondingly, our SOx data and those of Pioneer Venus cannot be compared in the context of temporal change.
