Equations describing the three-dimensional evolution of irregularities in a real ionospheric plasma are derived. The derived system is convenient for numerical calculations, since (unlike the original system) it does not contain strongly differing transport coefficients with respect to different directions. The derived equations describe the evolution of irregularities in a strong electric field as well as diffusional spreading in the absence of an external field. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated on the example of a homogeneous unbounded plasma for which analytical and numerical solutions are known.
