A theoretical investigation is made of disturbances in the stratosphere and mesosphere caused by UV radiation in the 1350-4000 A range. It is shown that the effect of this radiation, accompanied by the photodissociation of O2 and minor neutral constituents, can produce a signficant reduction in the density of negative ions and, hence, a significant increase in electron density. The effect quantitatively depends on wavelength, height, and especially the type of the principal negative ion.
