Pointing Accuracy: Schmidt Telescopes

Scientific paper

A distribution of the pointing of an astronomical telescope is studied in the altazimuth coordinate system, in order to clarify possibility of the damage caused by direct irradiation of the Lidar experiments from certain artificial satellites. The actual distribution is derived from the operation records of the 105-cm Schmidt telescope at Kiso Observatory, from May 23 through December 10, 1997. While the probability of the telescope pointing increases with the altitude, it becomes almost constant at the altitude between 50 and 80 degrees. Toward the zenith, it increases again because of favorable observational conditions there. The azimuthal probability of the telesope pointing tends to increase around the south due to the same reason.
