H-alpha spectroscopic observations, an H I spectrum, and CO (1-0) and CO (2-1) maps are presented for the Mk 171 system of merging galaxies. Extended CO emission is detected over a characteristic size of 8 kpc, with large concentrations around three compact sources observed in the NIR and radio continuum. The average CO (2-1)/CO (1-0) intensity ratio is around 1, suggesting thermal excitation due to a high molecular density or heating. Two of the compact (2.2-micron) sources are associated with the galaxies, NGC 3690 and IC 694. The third compact source is interpreted as an extranuclear starburst, which contains 2 X 10 to the 9th solar masses of H2 in a region smaller than 2 kpc. It is suggested that this region corresponds to the nucleus of a companion galaxy, accompanying NGC 3690 in its merger with IC 694.
